Baby It's Still Cold Outside

This lovely sweater/coat from Michael Kors appeared in my inbox this morning and I must say, it has my name written all over it! And yes while it is still cold outside I can't help but be a tad bit excited to travel to Arizona this coming weekend for some football and R&R (and shopping). Bring on the palm trees, mountains and sunshine!

Last night I was flipping through the January/February issue of Whole Living and came across this year's best self action plan. I don't normally buy into these "jump start your life in 4 weeks" kind of plans, but there were a few pieces that did stand out to me. Here are a few ideas I thought I would share with you.

Resist the urge to be productive right up until the moment you fall into bed. Take time to unwind.

Reshape Your Routine
Negative emotions, like junk food, have a way of clogging us up and bringing us down. "Clear out stale thoughts and you create a breding ground for positivity," says Kate Hanley, author of The Anywhere, Anytime Chill Guide.

Kate's 7 Day Plan

Day 1: Sit and breathe for 5 minutes, exhaling for a count of 4 and inhaling for a count of 2.

Day 2: Spend time on an activity that engages and destresses you (knitting, reading - not online shopping or watching reality shows).

Day 3: Visualize yourself competing a job and feeling revitalized afterward.

Day 4: listen to relaxing music for 20 minutes, doing nothing else.

Day 5: When you get annoyed, focus on something you're grateful for.

Day 6: Take the first step toward making amends with someone.

Day 7: Make a household chore meditative by giving it your undivided attention.

Merry Christmas

Before I get caught up in good tidings over the next few days I want to wish all of my friends a Merry Christmas!

I will leave you with some pictures of Amanda Brooks' family home in the Adirondacks. I think the idea of having a home in a "vacation spot" where you family regularly gathers is a grand idea. On paper of course. More details and pictures can be found here.

Phone Photos

Hi friends, sorry for the lack of posts lately, 'tis the season for shopping after all! Anyway, I figured I would share some photos I snapped with my phone over the past few weeks. Boring I know but better than nothing.
Lex snuggled in a faux fur throw
Owen jealous that I didn't snap his pic first
Notice the 79 degree temp reading - this was from yesterday - crazy!
Lex trying to groom Owen's eyes, weirdos
Jacked up Santa Sleigh in front of an auto accessories joint
My favorite little girl admiring our new front loading HE washer and dryer
Last but not least my Lulu water bottle at my office desk

Spiced Nuts

Every year at the holidays I like to break out my baking arsenal and make yummy treats for my friends and family. One recipe that I go back to each year is this spiced nut recipe. I have tried other nut recipes but this one is hands down my favorite. And of course I have to craft them up in some cute packaging. Cheers!
Don't you love my scanner in the background, LOL!

What I'm Loving

It has been a while since I posted some of my favorite things, and with the holidays here I figured what a better time than now.

My husband can attest that my Frye boots are a staple in my wardrobe these days. They are actually very comfortable.

This Stella & Dot bracelet, which looks 10 times better in person (actually all of S&D's jewelry looks better in person than on their site), might just be sitting under my Christmas tree this year.

I can't believe I am typing this, but I got these jeggings from the Gap and they are so comfy I wear them any chance I get.

I got this Lululemon hoodie to keep me warm at my 5:30am bootcamp class and I must say it is an instant favorite. The material is very thick, the thumb holes are great for keeping my hands warm and the high neck keeps my chin and neck toasty. And let's be honest, have any of us met a piece of Lulu wear that we don't like? Yes it is pricey but it is worth it in my opinion.

To be honest I just got this brush a few days ago after lusting for a boar bristle brush forever. I don't know how I lived without this brush, it makes my hair shiny and soft, who doesn't love that?

I received a sample of this Clinique cream and after using it for a few weeks I can definitely tell a difference in my skin. I have a lot of brown spots on my face from the sun (boo hiss) and this has helped minimized their appearance. I am just about out of the sample and am going to buy a full size ASAP.

What about you, any new favorites you have stumbled upon lately?

Holiday Eating Tips

I got this list in one of those mass forwarded emails, I thought it was too funny not to share.

1.Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday
buffet table knows nothing of the Holiday spirit. In fact, if you see
carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It's rare...
You cannot find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares
that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to
turn into an eggnog-alcoholic or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it. Have one
for me. Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole
point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out
of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with
skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a
sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort
to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Holiday party is to
eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello?

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and
New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do.
This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet
table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet
table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa,
position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple, Pumpkin, Mincemeat. Have a slice of
each. Or if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin.
Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with
the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have
some standards.

10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave
the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention.
Re-read tips; start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.

Remember this motto to live by: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand and wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

Jonathan to Go

I picked up a few of these at Starbucks today, aren't they just adorable? These might just be the perfect stocking stuffers! I mean who can't use a little Jonathan Adler in their life?

Christmas House

Since I believe all of my readers (all 3 of you) are stylish, I assume you read Tobi Fairley's blog. Recently she posted some stunning pictures of last year's Christmas House in Atlanta. I immediately fell in love with the house and had to share some of her pictures on here as well. Enjoy!
A stunning entry
Love the tree bursting with ornaments
This bathroom is a dream come true in my book
A stove to die for
I like the contrast of the dark wood and the white cabinetry. And that built in hutch, I die!
This island is exactly what I want, enough room at the end for a few seats
Love the rug and x benches
I like how the drapes are hung right against the ceiling and can be pulled all the way back to show off the windows
Last but certainly not least, a drool worthy outdoor fireplace

'Tis the Season

Yes my dear friends, it is that time of year to start dragging out the boxes and boxes of Christmas decorations. If you need a little inspiration take a look at the spread below. This is a Houston home styled by Sandra Lucas featured in the Holiday 2010 Traditional Home magazine. You can also see the same home styled in its everyday elegance here (it is the Rivercrest home). I hope you enjoy this space as much as I do.

I love the simple elegance of this fireplace.

The rug and tree decor are definitely my style.
A fireplace in the kitchen, yes please!

This firepit is on my wishlist.

For those of you that recall the post I wrote a while back about my dogs sleeping in bed with me, here is visual proof. My husband snapped this a while back and I recently found it on his phone.
Well Owen, the big brown dog, has taken it a step further and now likes to sleep horizontally on my pillow, literally leaving me with no room to rest my head. Last night was the last straw, hate to break it to you Ownsie but no more pillow sleeping for you.

Freshen Up Your Holiday Party

I came across this page in the latest Town&Country (still loving the new editor's work!) and had to share. I love reading little tips like this and trying to incorporate them into my life.

Sorry for the poor tear, but you should be able to click on the picture to enlarge. Cheers!

Find Your Happy

The other night at our Junior League meeting we had a little ice breaker where we wrote down things that make us happy and then had to find our match with somebody else in the room. This was very thought provoking on my part because I don’t know that I necessarily have favorites, but I gave it a shot. Below is my list that I wanted to share with you. What is your happy?

What COLOR makes you happy? I don’t know that I have a particular color that makes me happy, but usually when I see things that are pink they bring a smile to my face.

What FOOD makes you happy? I put wine down for this answer, but everyone told me that wasn’t a food. Boo hiss! So my next choice would be a piece of toast with creamy peanut butter on top. I love the way the peanut butter melts into a gooey mess on the bread.

What TV SHOW makes you happy? Any show that makes me laugh makes me happy. These days I have been hooked on reruns of King of Queens. The characters on the show hit close to home and Doug just cracks me up.

What BOOK makes you happy? After the events of 9-11 I heard about a book called Love, Greg and Lauren. Lauren was severely burned in one of the towers and was given little chance of survival. The book chronicles emails her husband Greg wrote to friends and family on Lauren’s status. What I loved about the book was the courage and love the husband had. This is one of those books you will want to read again.

What SONG makes you happy? If I had to narrow down my love of music to one song that makes me happy I would pick Summertime by Wil Smith (known back then as DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince). Everytime I hear that song it brings me back to my high school days where I didn’t have a worry in the world.

What HOLIDAY makes you happy? Christmas time makes me happy, my favorite part is buying gifts for loved ones. I don’t just buy gifts to have something to give, I really put a lot of thought into what I buy, making sure each gift fits its recipient. I also love the chance to drag out all my decorations and bring cheer to my home.

What SMELL makes you happy? Anything that smells like the beach makes me happy. No question about it.

What WEATHER makes you happy? The sun has such a huge impact on my mood. When its out I can’t help be happy and when it is hiding behind clouds so is my smile.
